Risky decisions and behavior of members of Greek Sororities and Fraternities in College

February 20, 2008 · 6 Comments

When you hear the word Greek what do you think of? I know I think of Zeus and Aphrodite some of the most powerful Greek gods known to man. The term Greek is also used in the college setting and even the Greek Letters are used to promote status in college. The term “being Greek” simply means that you are a member like the author of a “Greek Letter Organization” A sorority or a fraternity in college. Affectionately known as Fraternities (for men) or Sororities (for woman) these organizations foster dedication and kinship in college along with a unique outlook on life and people in society.

At Indiana university of Pennsylvania it is no different from thousands of colleges; young men and woman carry the theory that if you are not Greek then you do not have status. I am a proud member of Phi Kappa Psi and I have seen how status is associated with being in a Greek Organization on IUP’s Campus. Being in a fraternity is an amazing way to meet new people and network all across your campus. It is here that you meet all kinds of people sharing in the same values that most college kids have. These values are the need to rebel, drink, have sex, and have a good time all and all.

Phi Kappa Psi has a long line of tradition stretching back to the year of 1852 when the fraternity was founded. Founders of Phi Kappa Psi were dedicated college kids with a strong sense of helping others. Charles Page Thomas Moore and William Henry Letterman founding fathers of Phi Kappa Psi were nursing friends back to health out at Jefferson College in Western Pennsylvania. The students on the campus were suffering from influenza and needed to be watched until they were better. William Henry Letterman and Charles Page Thomas Moore stepped up and took charge of this cry for aid fostering the values of a fraternity that would lead them to still be remembered today.

I must be honest and I must say that when I first started thinking about joining a fraternity the first things that popped into my mind were parties, drinking, and girls. As I pledged though I began to find that it is not about the girls because the come and go, it is not about the drinking because all that does is hurt you in the long run. Parties are fun but they also are not what being in a fraternity is all about. The truth of the matter is that being in a fraternity or sorority is all about having a brotherhood or sisterhood that lasts. It is all about the guys or girls standing next to you that have been there and know everything you have gone through because they went through the same things to become a member.

Phi Kappa Psi is a fraternity that was founded on “selflessly helping others” this simple concept has lead to “great joy of serving others”. Not every fraternity lives by these generous gestures displaced on every Phi Psi Brother. Risky decisions, behaviors, and ego’s other members of “Greek Life” possess including not only fraternities but sororities also, Lead to “non-Greeks” to think that all Greeks are the same. Risky decisions, behaviors along with members of Greek Organization’s egos give insight to the way “being Greek” is interpreted.

The writer of this paper through research and long nights of stress wants answers to why people holding Greek letters participate in risk behaviors, and make risky decisions more than “non-Greek’s”. I want to know why Greek Organizations have bad reputations when it comes to drugs and alcohol and what leads to making such risky decions and practicing risky behaviors in the Greek community.

The methods I chose to use while researching this topic were refereed journals, personal experiences, and other online sources found on the internet. After many revisions and many long nights of writing hopefully I will come up with an answer to these mysteries I am researching.

Further looking into the issue I would like to give you a little more in-depth look at why I chose to research this topic and why it is such a personal endeavor of my own. It is no secret that fraternities, sororities, and half of college kids across the United States drink. Most of which is illegal and if caught would land them in a lot of trouble possibly ruining their futures. But the decisions are still made to drink and drink lots. Fraternities and sororities are more focused on alcohol consumptions, and for some reason think that quantity is the best way to go. Simply stated how much you can drink the faster you can the better off and more fun you will have. This is one of the top risky decisions among some of them which will be addressed in this paper.

Truman Capote very cleverly writes this story in the eyes of several characters giving you the feeling that you are there living the life as the character and events are taking place. Using amazing in-depth research and hypothesis as to how the murder could have happened. The story is told in such a way that makes you feel as if you were there while every event taking place was happening. Truman as I see it has used photographs, newspapers, and people’s narration of the incidents that have happened all of which have been saved by Perry who is collecting research about his own life and not seeing it. Also, over the course of the novel Perry the main character’s life there are many reflections of what his past have made him to be in life and just what decisions put him in the situations he found himself in.

I would recomend this book for people who are readers who can focus due to the fact that this book starts off very slow.

I found two quotes within this book that really caught my attention and made me chose to write about them. The first quote from “In cold blood” is a look at the words from Perry’s Sister expressing her feelings about the actions and path Perry had chosen. The second is a quote found within the same letter that states how amazing Perry’s father is even being a school dropout.

“It is no shame to have a dirty face – The shame comes when you KEEP it dirty”

Found on page (140) of “In cold blood” these words to me sent to Perry from his sister and his brother in law while he was in jail hit home for me. These words in my eyes basically mean that all the wrongs you have done in your life and mistakes you have mad are ok. They become not okay when you decide not to learn from your mistakes and wrong-doings, and continue to do wrong. The dirty face was symbolism for doing wrong and “keeping it dirty” was an analogy for knowing your doing wrong but continuing to do so.

Another quote that I found that I liked a lot was the description of Perry’s fathers literacy throughout his life it reads:

“It’s true Dad did not have a great extensive education but in school we only learn the words and how to spell them”

Found on (141) In cold blood” in the text of  the quote from Barbra Perry’s Brother really hit home for me. This touched me because me being a first generation college student along with my twin brother. I see just what this quote means and is trying to tell the reader of this novel. It means that although you did not go to Harvard or in Perry’s case his father did not finish school. It does not mean that the individual is any more or less capable of learning or of achieving greatness. It simply means that you learn through “living life” and experiences throughout your life which become lessons. These lessons if you will teach us in ways that school or any kind of formal instruction may not be able to. Being that they take place in the real world and not in the classroom you should be able to see why it may be more beneficial in some cases.

My point can be more cemently hardened by the information I used for outside sources to prove my case to you. The first of my sources which are both internet sources comes from researching my first quote. I simply looked at the statistics of people who commit crimes and the likelihood to commit a crime of the same nature in specifically murder. I was influenced based off the conclusion that if peole have a “dirty face” and learn from mistakes. How many of them do not learn and “keep their faces dirty”. My results varied but I found concrete information in a chart which you can see below:

chart-for-the-first-quote.gif For a bigger version go to: http://www.scottishexecutive.gov.uk/Publications/2002/11/15850/14165

Granite the chart is outdated, and these are stats from a different country. One can still see just how many murders learn from their mistakes. Also I saw the need to point out that other things influence the way people act such as drugs, alcohol, and just how many just committed the act out of anger or insanity (Neither drink or drugs, and Not known).

My second quote through research brought me to want to use refernces form success stories of famous people in our world today who have dropped out of High School. Upon dropping out they did something with their lives and became successful millionaires without a “formal education simply living through life’s ups and downs. The following is a list shows 10 of some of the famous people in our society today taken from socyberty.com:

  • 1) Quentin Tarantino
  • 2) Dave Thomas
  • 3) Johnny Depp
  • 4) Nicholas Cage
  • 5) Christina Aguilera
  • 6) Jim Carrey
  • 7) John Travolta
  • 8) Chris Rock
  • 9) Tom Petty
  • 10) Joe Pesci

All of the following decided to say forget school and they went to do their own thing. I know that Perry’s father was not as successful as far as wealth but it can be seen

through his character and his love that he is worth more than the fame and the money. Sometimes what people need to see is that just because someone does not have a piece of paper to show for their “in class” training they are still capable of doing amazing things in life.

Still in love with anyone?

February 3, 2008 · 2 Comments

People search their whole lives looking for that person that they can say I love you to. Some people go their whole lives telling others who fall in love that it was not real love. Or if they really loved you they would have never done this to you. They are wrong you cannot put a amount on love, and you cannot blame a person for falling out of love and falling in love with another. After all lets admit we are  human and we do change and loose feelings for everything that means something to us yes we are bipolar when it comes to love . That person who does not love you, they fell in love with who they are with and it was not because of you. They still love you just not as much as they used too because this new person made them feel the way you used to(or they could just be good in bed lol). It is up to the person that feels that they are in love to decide how to feel, completely up to the person who you tell you love, and strictly based on time and fate. Fuck I fall in love every-time I see a cute girl who passes and we catch eyes and I do not say anything. Not because I am scared, but because I am so wrapped up in those few seconds and controlled in that moment that no words are needed and you both know it  feels so right. Maybe love is one of those double standards your fucked if you do and you will be fucked if you do not. I guess it is what it is and it will happen when it does. You must be cautious though, if you try to make it happen well you will end up reading this poem and rethinking your views on love. Or, you just may end up being me and just now getting over a girl that you still love. ^_^
